The Journey of Androcid winning 3rd place at Goa CM Startup Award 2017
Chief Minister’s Startup Challenge is one of Goa’s premier events to recognize startups for their awesome work and this year, it was it’s second run. The event was started in 2016. This year, i thought about androcid being part of this event.
This event was organized by Govt of Goa, EDC Limited , Don Bosco College of Engineering and CIBA (one of Goa’s finest incubators) The winner of the awards were to receive : 1st Prize of 5 Lakhs, 2nd Prize of 2 Lakhs and 3rd Prize 1 Lakh. More than the awards, it was the recognition that was important that this event would have brought to the winning organization, especially from the reputed organizations as mentioned above, including EDC, which is a premier financial institution in Goa.
First Hurdle: The Simplest one
A step where you dont have to face anyone 🙂 The site had an online form to submit the details about the work and team. That was an easy work of the competion. The due date for this was Jan 16th, 2017 and we had submitted the form in time. All we had to do is wait for the email/public announcement for the results. No other information was told to us except for an automatic email that they have received our proposal and they are scanning the same.
Second Hurdle: Heart beats up
After a few weeks time, we received the email from the team CIBA regarding the second round selection:
It was a happy moment with an “unannounced” date. So we had to wait for another few days to receive the date of presentation.
This date was to present our pitch to set of industrialists, office bearers of the institutions mentioned above and investors. It took me some days to make a deck presentable for the event that was scheduled to be on 24th February 2017.
The presentation went awesome. The panelist asked me questions on Founder ( so it means me 🙂 ) and of course about the work we do, a bit about the team. Since my turn was amongst the last few, the panelist were in rush to finish up this process soon as there were many others behind me. Post the award i realized, there were a total of 37 startups in this list and all of them were kept on the same day for 15mins presentation. Kudos to the spirit of the organizers and panelist to listen to the presentation of each one, pleasantly.
After the presentation i went home and in a week’s time, we got this email about selection of Androcid in top 10 lists.
This time, we were called to discuss the fair methodology of implementation. This is the first time i met the other finalist. Glad to see the most of them were from a known network in Goa. What was even more satisfying was that, two of the apps built by Androcid were also part of the top 10 finalist: SaleApp ( Android & Web) and Lokaso. A lot of queries were discussed and one of the key point that was mentioned was to have presentation only with the team and panelists than infront of other participants. The office bearers were clear to a point that the marks after the judgement will be kept in a sealed envelope and opened only during the event announcement. Post the event, there was a networking session to speak to other finalists and of course the office bearers to know more.
Third Hurdle: 2X Blood Pressure
Finally, the dates of the final presentation was announced: March 22nd 2017. This presentation needed a tweak based on the discussion we had during the meetup earlier. I was asked questions on the work we do, information on team, kind of work we do, the process and future scope. This was a great experience as a lot of top industries from reputed firms were part of this. It was a presentation for just 15mins against a timer so we knew it needed to be crisp 🙂
Fourth Hurdle: The Wait is always a Killer
One thing we realized, the wait is a real killer. Considering the Goa Legislative Elections and Panchayat elections (Thanks to Code of conduct etc.), we knew that the final award date would be postponed. So did it happen. It almost took 3 months for the award ceremony to get announced, owing to CM’s availability. And one fine day, received the date of the event: June 15th, 2017 at 10am at EDC Hall, Panaji:
Fifth Hurdle: The Winning moment
CM Shri. Manohar Parrikar was to be part of this event so all eyes were on his arrival and of course the announcements to follow. I met a lot of media who were always been part of this journey. Newton Sequeira, Karan Sehgal, Vikant Sahay, Suhasini Prabhugaonkar Madame and many more, thanks for all the support. The media has been always great to startups in Goa and thanks to above (and many more like them) who’ve been great in supporting “startup” culture in Goa.
A good gesture by the organizers to facilitate all the top 10 finalists. This ensured that everyone is awarded for their efforts. Followed with the big news, “The Third Place goes to Androcid..”
Thank you to entire Androcid team for always being so supportive in this journey. This is not an award for Androcid, its for the “Team Androcid” and the efforts that goes in every commit we do.
Thanks to all the support we have received. Its not about winning but about learning. We learnt a lot during this journey. It was great meeting many people such as Santosh Kenkre Sir and Borker sir from EDC, Pandurang sir from persistent, Prof from BITS, DBCE, and others. Thanks to Ryan Carvalho sir for wonderful words of inspiration and always supporting entrepreneurship in young guys like us.
